Fargo Juneteenth

Fargo 5th annual Juneteenth

The 5th Annual Fargo Juneteenth celebration, titled "Black to the Future Pt. 2," organized by Fred's Dissonance in collaboration with the City of Fargo and North Dakota State University, aims to commemorate the emancipation of African Americans and envision a future rooted in unity and progress. The event, scheduled for June 15th from 12 pm to 6 pm, focuses on Afro-Futurism, utilizing history as a tool to shape a freer future for all.

 

Purpose

 Our purpose is a community united in the celebration of diversity, resilience, and innovation. Fargo Juneteenth aspires to be a catalyst for positive change, weaving together the threads of African American history, Afro-Futurism, and the concept of Sankofa, creating an immersive experience that honors the past, celebrates the present, and propels us into a brighter future.

Event Components:

  1. History in Action:

    • Curated exhibition showcasing historical documents, newspapers, and media clippings.

    • Goal: Reflect on challenges and victories, emphasizing the importance of understanding our roots.

  2. Afro-Futurism in Action:

    • Inventive displays, virtual reality, augmented reality, Afro-futuristic art installations.

    • Platform for community members to showcase inventions.

    • Goal: Spark creativity, encouraging participants to envision and contribute to an inclusive, innovative future.

  3. Sankofa in Action:

    • Live performances, a hair show celebrating African American beauty, community conversations.

    • Goal: Empower individuals to appreciate their identity and heritage, learning from the past to build a better present.

Moorhead 2nd annual Juneteenth

The proposed Juneteenth Celebration aims to commemorate freedom, culture, and community spirit, building on the success of previous events. Hosted at the Hjemkomst Center in Moorhead, Minnesota, the event will delve into the rich tapestry of Afro-Futurism, a cultural movement blending science fiction, history, and the African diaspora. Funded by The city of Moorhead, Lake Region Arts Council Art and Cultural Fund, and others this celebration promises a day of joy, learning, and unity.

Event Components:

  1. Main Stage Performances:

    • Engaging performances including drumming, storytelling, dancing, singing, and a multi-generational panel sharing personal experiences and insights.

  2. Learning Spaces:

    • Interactive exhibits and educational displays throughout the venue, exploring African American history and culture.

  3. Children's Activities:

    • A dedicated space offering coloring, crafts, and book readings every 30 minutes, promoting literacy and cultural awareness among children.

  4. Film Showcase:

    • Screenings of films exploring Afro-Futurist themes and the African American experience, providing a visual journey into cultural imagination and history.

  5. Afro-Futuristic Projections:

    • An immersive room featuring dynamic visual projections and installations, showcasing the powerful imagination and vision of Afro-Futurism.

  6. Vendor Hall and Resource Tables:

    • Opportunities for community members to connect and learn, with a variety of vendors and organizations showcasing products and services.

  7. Community-Focused Snacks:

    • Free snack-like foods provided for families, fostering a sense of community and shared celebration.

Bismark 2nd Annual

This event is organized by the Bismarck Juneteenth Planning Committee in collaboration with Freds Dissonance and High Plains Fair Housing, aims to honor the emancipation of African Americans while emphasizing progress and victories in North Dakota. Scheduled for June 19th, this event serves as a platform for commemorating historical figures and fostering dialogue on voting rights and knowing our rights. Our goal is to create a space for reflection, celebration, and envisioning a brighter future.

 

Event Components:

  1. Prayer Circle & Land/Labor Acknowledgement: Commence the event with a prayer circle, followed by acknowledging the historical context and indigenous contributions to the land.

  2. Cultural Performances: Engage attendees with vibrant performances by the Rwanda Dancers, Geraldine’s Daughter & Partner, and the Royal Band, celebrating the rich cultural diversity.

  3. Speakers & Poets: Local poets and speakers will share reflections on Juneteenth, highlighting its significance in the journey towards equality and justice.

  4. Public Art Installations:

    • Historical Figures Tribute: Art installations featuring Henrietta Lacks, John Lewis, Satchel Paige, and Dr. King, accompanied by informational bubbles detailing their contributions.

    • Vision for the Future: Encourage attendees to envision a more inclusive future, addressing historical injustices like redlining.

  5. Interactive Activities:

    • Public Performance/Social Practice Art Piece: Engage participants in Kiwanis Park with activities curated by local artists, encouraging reflection on the theme of forgiveness and progress.

    • Community Dialogue: Facilitate discussions on progress and the future of Bismarck, allowing community members to voice their opinions.

JAMESTOWN JUNETEENTH

Fred's Dissonance proposes a Jamestown Juneteenth 1st Annual celebration with the support of Wearexone experience, Heather McDougall and The Art Center . To produce 1st annual Jamestown Juneteenth, Fred's Dissonance is partnering with Jamestown Art center. Afro Futurism using history as a way to make the future freer for all of us is the focus of this one day celebration at the Jamestown art center June 22nd, 3pm to 6pm. 

Purpose

Crafted as an immersive experience, the 1st Annual Jamestown Juneteenth aims to celebrate Black history and Afro-Futurism, focusing on art as a powerful medium for expression and education.

 Taking inspiration from the successful Fargo Juneteenth celebration, our event will similarly integrate education, entertainment, art, and volunteerism. Like Fargo's celebration, Jamestown Juneteenth will be free and open to all community members.

 The celebration will revolve around the theme "Art to the Future," highlighting how artistic endeavors can drive social change. This theme emphasizes the visioning process inherent in creating a more inclusive and equitable future for all.

  • Fargo, North Dakota, is the fourth fastest growing city in the country. The percentage of Black residents in Fargo was 2.7% ten years ago. Black residents comprised 8.8% of the population of Fargo, North Dakota in 2020. We are committed to bringing ND to life! It is our goal to create an environment where everyone feels at home, where sober fun and cultural events can be enjoyed by all. In order to ensure the success of our city and region, we provide opportunities to marginalized communities to celebrate their uniqueness, embrace their talents, and build their legacy.

  • What is Juneteenth? June 19th,1865 represents the anniversary date of the Union army

    proclaiming freedom for enslaved peoples. African Americans declared June 19th as Juneteenth a contraction of June and Nineteenth, also known as Emancipation Day or Freedom Day. The opportunity to bring joy, fun, and unity to the community with your support and assistance is very exciting to me. Participants at this year's Fargo Juneteenth will have the opportunity to engage in education, entertainment, virtual reality, art, and volunteerism. All members of the community are welcome to participate in such cultural events for free.

  • Juneteenth celebration is poised to be an unforgettable event, providing a rich tapestry of experiences for participants. With opportunities to engage in education, entertainment, virtual reality, art, and volunteerism, this celebration encapsulates the spirit of freedom. Thanks to generous contributions, over 150 youth will enjoy free meals, and more than 400 families will receive complimentary photos and Juneteenth products. The celebration will also spotlight the talents of Black and Brown artists from the West Fargo, Fargo, Moorhead, Jamestown, and Bismarck communities, with efforts made to ensure fair compensation for their contributions. By integrating resources from across the region, this event is poised to have a lasting impact for years to come, embodying the essence of unity and belonging.
